An Open Educational Resource (OER) is a freely available, openly licensed media entity used for teaching, learning, and research. An OER can be text, video, audio, or a multimedia asset. It could even be a mini-course or video game. In creating an OER checklist for my courses, I wanted to keep the form simple and focused on necessary information.

I have included a handout called “Herbalism 101: A Guide to Plant Medicine Preparations” in the Be Your Own Herbalist course, because knowledge of herbal preparations is fundamental to empowering students on their herbal journeys. Understanding the different methods of consuming medicinal plants not only allows for greater efficacy in healing but also invites a deeper appreciation for the plants themselves, fostering a more intimate connection with nature.

One of the first images I typically need to create for any commercial online course is a course “thumbnail,” which is required by most commercial learning management systems (LMSes) as a marketing tool to entice people to sign up for the course. A course thumbnail is not quite the same thing as a logo, as it is a graphic that usually contains the course title and some sort of image related to the course content. The course thumbnail will show up on the course listing page as well as in the course catalog.

For my minicourse video, I created a brief introduction to herbs. This will be one of the first videos in the course, so it's a primer to help get the students ready for the rest of the course. One of the main purposes of the video was to compare culinary herbs with medicinal herbs, noting there is a lot of crossover.

The animation video I created was designed to quickly teach people about the basics of taking herbs safely. It aligns with Course Learning Outcome (CLO) 5: "Select basic herbal remedies for common conditions along with dosage and type of delivery, prioritizing safety by checking any potential contraindications."

For my interactive module, I plan on creating a lesson on how to choose herbs based on Ayurveda. The interactive lesson will first teach students about herb selection criteria. Then, students will be able to choose appropriate herbs in a brief interactive scenario. The storyboard template I used is one I created for myself in PowerPoint.

My interactive module is called "How to Choose Herbs in Ayurveda" to facilitate learning outcome 3) Identify the main herbal energetic qualities and their relationship to a variety of common health conditions. I set out to primarily utilize a branching scenario to help students learn how to choose herbs in Ayurveda, but also included a drag and drop to learn the Ayurveda qualities.
