One of the first images I typically need to create for any commercial online course is a course “thumbnail,” which is required by most commercial learning management systems (LMSes) as a marketing tool to entice people to sign up for the course.
A course thumbnail is not quite the same thing as a logo, as it is a graphic that usually contains the course title and some sort of image related to the course content. The course thumbnail will show up on the course listing page as well as in the course catalog.
For the course “Be Your Own Herbalist,” I created a course thumbnail by using an original public domain graphic from Wikimedia called “Herbs and Spices” from the following URL:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Herbs_and_spices_(30081439308).jpg
Since this graphic is already colorful and well laid out, I did not need to manipulate it in any way. For the rest of the graphic, I used the same color scheme for the text, harvest colors, which also speaks to the “earthy” nature of an herbalism course.
The ALT text would be the same as the image text: “How to Be Your Own Herbalist – Introductory Course.”
The design is simple with large lettering to make it easy to read. I will note that orange on yellow for the subtitle, “Introductory Course,” is not necessarily the best in terms of accessibility, but this text is incidental. The real focus is the name of the course, which is a large, bold, slightly cursive font to make it inviting.
ALT TEXT = “How to Be Your Own Herbalist – Introductory Course”
